Hardware

Most of the hardware below is stuff I have gotten from people that don't know what to do with their old systems. Luckily I was there when it happened ... ;-)

LAN

Computers evenly spread across my cramped appartment ...

Host CPU RAM Storage Network Operating System(s) Comments
gw Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz 1GB 80GB, 2x80GB in RAID-1 2 x D-Link DGE-528T (1Gbps) OpenBSD 4.5/i386 Router (PF), HTTP, DNS, SMTP, IMAP, NTP ...
fs Intel Dual-Core E5200 2.5GHz 2GB 40GB, 3x500GB in RAID-5 D-Link DGE-528T (1Gbps) OpenBSD 4.6/i386 Fileserver (NFS and Samba), CVS
ws Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 4GB 320GB Attansic L1 (1Gbps), D-Link DGE-528T (1Gbps) Windows 7, Arch Linux, OpenBSD-current/amd64 Workstation (Desktop)
tv AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 512MB 250GB, 500GB Intel 82541PI (1Gbps) Ubuntu 9.04 I love this chassis. Pure simplicity. ~500 movies, all illegally obtained of course (give me a better alternative and I'll pay). Connected to my 40" LCD Samsung TV and a cheapo 5.1 audio system.
hack AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 512MB 4GB, 10GB, 4GB 100Mbps OpenBSD-current/i386, NetBSD, FreeBSD Test machine; snapshots, diffs, OSs, etc.
wind MSI Wind U-100 (Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz) 2GB 160GB 100Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04, OpenBSD-current/i386 Ultra cool netbook for use on the road. My only complaint is the idiotic placement of the Fn key.

Cluster-1

My first attempt at some sort of cluster ... (I had to use the hardware for something)

Cluster-1 side view Cluster-1 top view
Host CPU Motherboard RAM Storage NIC Operating System
cn1 Intel Pentium III 500MHz Compaq crap 256MB 2GB Compact Flash 100Mbps
cn2 Intel Pentium III 450MHz Asus P2B 64MB NFS on cn1 1Gbps Intel
cn3 Intel Pentium II 300MHz 64MB NFS on cn1 100Mbps

cn1 has a stupid Compaq motherboard that won't boot without a keyboard or display adapter present (unlike cn2 and cn3). Oh, and the power wiring (right image) is not my proudest moment ... ;-)

Cluster-2

(Work In Progress)

This time I'll use an ATX 20-pin connector from a broken motherboard that the PSU will connect to, rather than cutting the PSU apart. The system at the top row will boot from a 2GB Compact Flash card using a CF->IDE adapter and the two other nodes will PXE boot from it. This will join Cluster-1 for a 6-node cluster that I've no idea what to do with (yet) ;-)
